Squawk's Club Notes
Round 1 vs St Pauls 2009
A great day was had by all at the ANZAC Tribute Match last week. Guest speaker Major General Allan Stretton was sensational. Some of his stories of his travels and experiences will long live on those who were fortunate enough to be in attendance.
On the field it wasn’t our most successful day by any means in terms of results but it was fantastic to see so many youngsters in both the seniors and reserves sides.
The seniors got jumped early by a fit and well drilled reigning premier and it looked as if it was going to be a long day at the office. But the way we responded to the challenge was sensational and we took a two goal lead into the final term. Unfortunately on the back of a stiffening breeze, the Dogs ran over the top of us to get their season off to a good start. Up forward big Dom marked everything booting six majors while Dogga seemed to have brought his own footy in the middle. We can take plenty from the game considering the amount of top liners that were on the sidelines but we must bounce back this week with a win at Hurlingham Park.
Steve Muscat’s new look reserves side had a great win over very good opposition. With only 7 players remaining from last years prelim final side, it was a breath of fresh air to see all the kids stand up when the pressure was applied. Feral led from the front in the middle, as did Pulf down back. Falcs controlled the ruck and Walts and Rogers finished off all the good work. Lets keep it up this week.
The Colts came up against a very good St Pauls side and never gave in til the final siren. Tom Fitzgerald, Sam Jendy and Rylan Mahoney were consistent performers for the Rosellas while Scott Mellick with three goals did well up forward. Hopefully we can get that first win on Friday night at Narre!
Round 2 vs East Brighton 2009
It’s never an easy place to go Hurlingham Park and I cant remember the last time we had an easy win there so it came as no surprise that we were ran right to the wire again by a very spirited and tenacious Vampires side. Although were far from our best it was good see that even when things looked to be going south we had the fight and resilience to bounce back and grab the four points.
Dogga’s effort on the far wing late in the game was the turning point and the reason we won the game. He beat four blokes had a few bounces and hit T-Man on the lead who goaled from 50. Sefa, Matty and Tommy were others to perform well.
The Reserves had a comprehensive win over a gallant East Brighton side. It was a case of the young and the old with Bizz and Butts returning to lend a hand to the bevy of youngsters that are now in the team. Falcs had another huge game and can’t be far away, as did Moose. Rogers booted another lazy five, which capped off a very good team performance.
A big night for the Colts, with a breakthrough win by 8 goals under lights against Narre North Foxes. Well done Paul, Ian and boys! Great all-round team effort, but our backline led by Timmy Lawson, Danks and Keats was just superb. Our attack on the footy and teamwork was a real feature. Team spirit was awesome and a stirring first-up rendition of the club song!
